“We have a liaison, we’ll have officers in uniform that you’ll see, and plainclothes officers that you won’t see.ABOVE: St Pete Pride President Nathan Bruemmer (L) and Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried June 25. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway. “The only thing that’s different is we’re looking at a larger area, we have four outdoor events so far that we know are scheduled,” says St. “We have a great relationship with local authorities, we have for years.” “I’m not concerned,” says Pride President and Interim Executive Director Nathan Bruemmer. Petersburg Police Department and Pride organizers say there’s nothing to worry about. Supporters of progressive politics are also well aware that Florida has seen a rise in hate crimes of all kinds since 2016-and that Sunshine State Governor Ron DeSantis kicked off Pride Month by signing a law prohibiting transgender girls from playing scholastic sports on women’s teams, then followed up the next day by signing the state’s budget after striking several line items beneficial to Florida’s gay, bi, trans and queer communities.įrom a security standpoint, looking after 10,000 people in one place for one night is one thing, while looking after those people spread over a considerable urban area-and spread over four weeks-is something altogether different. Pete Pride thankfully hasn’t seen the sort of tragic violence that has devastated safe spaces elsewhere, keeping safe is equal to having fun in the minds of many-particularly considering that next weekend marks the fifth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, one of the nation’s worst modern-day mass shootings and one that specifically targeted members of the state’s LGBTQ+ community. It’s a lot of stuff, not to mention the numerous edge-of-Pride events taking place at bars, clubs and restaurants around town.

These themes include Outdoor Adventure Week and its Pride OUTSide festival in Vinoy Park this Saturday, June 5 Family Week and its We Are Family event in North and South Straub Parks on Saturday, June 12 Arts & Music Week and its “Arts + Qulture” shindig at the Warehouse Arts District’s Factory on Saturday, June 19 and Taste of PrideFest Week, which culminates in a return to North and South Straub Parks on Saturday, June 26 for the Pride Picnic. Pete Pride features multiple smaller events (a nod to pandemic protocols) spread throughout the month, anchored by larger outdoor weekend “signature events” that reflect each week’s theme. Rather than its signature one-weekend schedule including a massive parade-moved in 2017 from its traditional home in the Grand Central District to the downtown waterfront-and street festival, this year’s St. Pete Pride is back this month, albeit in a distinctly different fashion. With the return of, you know, going out and doing stuff, St.
